How to Scale Alignment

It’s not uncommon for founders of growing start-ups to feel like prisoners in their own company, with everything depending on their presence, energy, and ability to spot what’s failing.

“Just delegate more” is too simplistic. Keep playing superhero also is.

Instead, distinguish between clarifying direction & driving execution.

1️⃣ Clarifying direction

Direction is typically clarified by founders, with input from the team.

As the source of the organization, they’re closest to its origin and intent.

But once the direction is clear, something needs to flip.

2️⃣ Driving execution

💡Execution should not be leader-driven.

In effective organizations, daily operations are owned by the people closest to the work.

They have the most information. They see reality as it is. They can respond faster and make better calls.

⚠ During execution, leaders don’t disappear but their style changes.

• From being decision bottlenecks → to supporting decisions

• From micromanaging activities → to upholding high standards

• From controlling individuals → to removing structural obstacles
